Though I did it by myself, and so could almost anyone else, I would recommend help on the last part. Flipping the bed up on its head by lifting it from the foot with concentrated force did make me kinda nervous since it's not all one solid piece of wood. Spreading it out between two people would be a better idea.
I normally don't take the time to review items, (in fact this is the first time doing one) but maybe it can help those out that know they aren't helpless and have common sense themselves.
THe item came in a cardboard box that looked like it had fallen off the truck a few times. The box was equal parts packing tape and cardboard, with some large holes at the corner. Fortunately none of the pieces fell out.
As far as assembly goes: This took about six hours and was really the worst experience I've ever had with self-assembled furniture.
As noted previously, the instructions are sub-par. The drawings very faint and you'll need a magnifying glass to discern some of the important details needed to orient pieces correctly.
I've had to back track and disassemble the partially-assembled bed twice to fix mistakes made by unclear instructions.
Once I got to the point of laying the platform on the frame and the pre-drilled holes do not align. This is astonishingly bad craftsmanship from South Shore. I've had to drill my own holes to complete the assembly of the kit.
The assembled piece is fairly stable once you secure it in a place in the bedroom.
A queen size mattress rests on top of it perfectly. However, the platform has no lip or edge to hold the mattress in place so it's very easy to slide the mattress out of position when you walk by, or when you're making the bed. I will probably break out the drill and add a lip at a later date.
Another problem I'm having, as there is carpeting in this bedroom, is that the storage drawers are difficult to open. They basically rest right on the carpet and are dragging against the carpet every time you try to open them, so it requires some sturdy tugs to yank it open.
Overall, I'm very unhappy with this purchase.
Honestly, you can purchase the OPPDAL bed from IKEA for about the same price and I'm convinced you would have a much easier time assembling it, the assembly would fit together properly and you'll have a much sturdier, higher-quality pieces of furniture at the end of it all.
1. Non-rounded corners, rough edges. I noticed this in other reviews too, and yeah it's pretty bad. You can expect to bang up your shins on this bed. I may go and try to round out myself, eventually.
2. Nothing to secure the mattress. The platform is made up of 4 panels of slick surfaced wood, so the mattress will slip around with little effort. If you toss and turn, or hop into bed sort of roughly, expect the bed to move around. You may be able to place a giant rubber grip pad between the platform and the mattress, however.
3. Along the head of the bed, the picture (and the instructions) show that the board along the floor runs up flush to the edge of the platform. It does not, and is a few inches shy. It's only like 4 inches longer than the board on the foot of the bed. Interestingly enough, for the optional headboard you can buy for this bed, the instruction's illustration for this bed shows the header board at the correct length. In any case, the header board would have looked a little cleaner and made-to-fit had the head board along the floor ran all the way to the edges like the picture shows.
In a side note, this is a particle board bed. I feel as though people should not be down-staring the product due to this. You honestly expect full wood construction at this price range? Curve your review to the price tier of the product, people...

Assembly was smooth I followed the instruction, took me about as long as it said it would.
The materials are a bit flimsy, but one its assembled the bed is fairly strong. if you put pressure on the wrong thing while you're assembling the bed you could easily damage it, so make sure you follow the instructions.
The bed is flat on top so the mattress is free to slide around, i also picked up a cheap anti-slip pad to go underneath the mattress, and it works great. This is a must, our mattress used to slide around on outbox spring, but it was contained by the headboard and footboard of the old bed, this bed has none of those things.
The bad came as advertised, and for the price, I am very happy with it.
Now this arrived at around 2 pm on the scheduled day it said, let me say pouring day on top and this box is heavy. The delivery man laughed when I asked for him to put it in my varanda, maybe 5 front steps? That's how heavy, in the pouring rain the man managed to put it on it side and slide it up to my varanda and than I had help from family to bring it inside. There was no way anyone could get this up the stairs... So opened the box right by the front of the house and carried the wood pieces up to my room.. Maybe 4 times up&down, tiring ... Than I start by preparing, taking our mattress and old bed out, and I put the peices where they were suppose to go, I started reading the instructions, they were pretty easy, the screws and etc could of been labed better the wood pieces are marked with letters. Now I got one drawer peice in brown when my bed was ordered in black lol but that's fine. Than by the time we actually started screwing in nails was maybe 4pm, and this took all the way until 9pm. First be very careful screwing in these screws.. Any little mis direction and you end up poking it right across and scrapping the wood peices(FYI I understand this is like synthetic wood maybe yeh maybe not, I'm aware it's not the best material). Than the drawer metal sliding part, it was so yucky! It was probably something to make the drawers slide but it was hard to work with. Secondly after dealing with the yucky whatever, we couldn't get the drawers to fit. We don't know what could possibly have had happened but it was far from slidding in. After 15 minutes trying to get the right drawer in, my boyfriend finally got it by basically kicking close.. Meaning to open and close again would be hassle so, left drawer went to the basement by 9pm we didn't have the energy and patience for such a simple bed to force the other drawer in, so we left that side basically open. It seems like the top was screwed on too tight ?that the drawer didn't wanna fit inside, than we unscrewed that but made no difference in fact we never screwed it back. Than we started looking at the sides and trying to figure out what to do but we don't know the cause of why the drawers didn't fit, which is really disappointing we need nothing more than storage in this room, but what you going go do. Thirdly, it doesn't feel very safe if you were going to step on it but with the matrress it seems fine. Supports me and my boyfriend and tickling wars. The matrress does move, we basically have the frame on the corner of the room so we just "cornered" the mattress and to be honest there's maybe a 2-3" platform on my right side and 5-6" platform on the bottom feet where we can sit but not for too long until your ass starts going numb. So I kind of don't understand how you'd "center" a mattress just like in the picture and have as much space as youd have in the picture, but that's whatever. My mattress is a full/double size. I like the platform look, I like that I can hide wires and extra storage boxes under it and its open access. I didn't like the time it took to put together, I don't like the non stable feeling, I don't like that I can't use the drawers, and I didn't like how they mixed a brown peice in a black set during the packaging. I'd recommend this if you don't mind going through what I did, I'd recommend it because it does the job at holding up the mattress which is what I really need ... In conclusion and you need a frame and this once catches your eyes because of the price, that's fine it'll do the job but just be prepared to maybe deal with extra issues putting it together ... For the price, I got a good bed size and frame. This fits into my lifestyle and this is how these s***ty beds keep being made cause people like me will like this and buy it.
As an update - This bed frame broke fairly easily. The supports pulled from the frame causing them to slide and eventually cracking parts of the frame. The Warranty it comes with meant we got the parts to replace the broken pieces but I would take back my Worth the buy. More of a hassle then it should have been.
